Hovalin

An Open Source Violin

The hovalin is a functional acoustic violin that can be produced using most standard consumer 3d printers. The total cost of raw materials for the violin (4/4) is currently about $70. The hovalin was designed with Autodesk Fusion 360, and its shape and dimensions are inspired by the Stradivarius violin model. The hovalin project is inspired in part by David Perry's FFFiddle.

The Story of the Hovalin Project

What began as a passion project has taken on a life of it's own Orignially, we wanted to create a violin that would light up with colors according to Kailtyn Hova's synesthesia. Once we created the first prototype, we realized that the violin was actually a functional instrument that could be open sourced.

After open sourcing, we have since seen a growing community of makers and musicians embrace the hovalin. Most excitingly, we have created school programs centered around this project where students use STEM grants to 3D print their school's music program.
